Patrick Swayze again shows us his versatility. This film turns the clock back to the Vietnamese refugee influx of 1975. Swayze portrays a Marine in charge of housing the refugees until sponsors can be found to help them blend in to American life. His character is sympathetic to the plight of the refugees, and tries to make the situation as comfortable as possible.

We've seen many films about how bad it was for the Americans during the Vietnam War, but we see so few films about how the native Vietnamese were affected. Brothers Timothy Linh Bui and Tony Bui tell a story that gives us an insight into their situation. It shows us how frightening it was for the refugees coming to a new country. However, the movie leaves us wondering what becomes of the characters in their new lives; it really concentrates on their experience in the camp.

The film had its premiere at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival, and has been shown at many Asian film festivals. It has been getting pretty good reviews from critics. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
