People, if you stop going to see Tyler Perry's movies, perhaps he'll no longer be encouraged to make them. Despite dismal critical reviews, Perry is a juggernaut at the box office, making cheap films that rake in the bucks. After gaining popularity via a series of plays, Perry moved to film, with Diary of a Mad Black Woman being his first breakout hit. He followed that up with Madea's Family Reunion, a movie that makes certain members of the BOP staff cringe in horror. That's okay, though. Taste is nothing if not subjective.

Lionsgate knows good, profitable franchises when they see them. They've turned tiny horror film Saw into a three film series and Hostel looks to be following a similar route. And so it is that they will release yet another Tyler Perry film onto an unsuspecting public. This time, it's a romantic family drama titled Daddy's Little Girls.

Idris Elba (HBO's The Wire) stars in the film as a single father named Monty. He's a mechanic who is living in a rough neighborhood, trying to keep it together as he raises his daughters all alone. When his drug-dealing former wife is awarded custody of the girls, Monty tries everything to win them back. When he takes a brief job as a chauffeur, he meets a tough attorney (Gabrielle Union) and he asks for her help. As they work together to bring Monty's family back together, sparks fly, even though they're from (cliche alert) two different worlds.

We love Gabrielle Union and a number of us like Elba's work on The Wire, so we're hoping they can push the film to be something special. But perhaps this is finally the film where Perry's luck changes. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
