Noted producer/director Garry Marshall is responsible for television shows such as Happy Days and Mork & Mindy. He has written for The Dick Van Dyke Show and The Odd Couple. As a director, he has created movies such as Young Doctors in Love, Runaway Bride, and Pretty Woman. He is one of the most accredited, lauded talents the industry has ever known. So, when he takes on a new project, Hollywood takes note. Georgia Rule is his latest project, and he has brought onboard a bevy of Hollywood talent in order to continue the hot streak he has been on with his most recent work on The Princess Diaries franchise.

Lindsay Lohan has sobered up long enough (or close enough) to star in this movie as a rebellious teen (wow, that will be a stretch) named Rachel, whose mother, Lilly, sends her away to spend the summer with granny. When the girl arrives at her home for the next three months, the sleepy Mormon town has her furious about being cast off by her mother. Sure, there was the car wreck, and the drinking and swearing and promiscuity, but nobody deserves to have to spend her summer being this bored. The situation grows worse as her grandmother – who looks a lot like Jane Fonda – begins to impose her will on her scion through house rules. The two of them repeatedly clash, but then eventually grow to understand and bond with one another. This creates complications for the woman stuck in the middle, Lilly. She has never gotten along with her mother and sees too much of that woman in her daughter already. Their new alliance creates tremendous stress for her, and all three women must navigate the difficulties caused by three generations of tension.

With Georgia Rule, the magic words for Garry Marshall are once again "chick flick". He has found his late life niche and he continues to mine it relentlessly. People who enjoyed Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Fried Green Tomatoes and similar fare have a clear choice this summer. For the rest of us, Georgia Rule simply provides us with numerous further opportunities to mock Lohan. (David Mumpower/BOP)
