Underdog kids take on despicable adults. It’s a tried but true formula that has driven films like Home Alone and Snow Day to somewhat unexpected levels of success. Big Fat Liar takes this framework and adds a Hollywood twist and Malcolm in the Middle’s Frankie Muniz. Currently set for a February release, this movie may just be the cure for children’s mid-winter doldrums.

Muniz plays Jason Shepherd, a boy whose school essay has erroneously managed to wind up in the hands of sleazy Hollywood producer Marty Wolf (Private Parts’ Paul Giamatti). When Shepherd learns that Wolf has turned the paper into a blockbuster hit movie entitled Big Fat Liar, he travels to Los Angeles with his best friend (played by current Nickelodeon staple Amanda Bynes) to have his revenge.

Big Fat Liar is the official feature-film debut for director Shawn Levy, who has previously directed TV and direct-to-video movies and series. The trailer is already running in theaters and certainly seems to be hitting with the target audience. I would expect Universal to advertise heavily on networks like Nickelodeon and the WB as the release date approaches, so on paper, Big Fat Liar has a lot going for it. Once the marketing kicks in, we may be able to better tell if this is the next Snow Day or the next Max Keeble’s Big Move. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
