From View Askew Productions comes Vulgar, the serious tale of a down-on-his-luck man who performs as a clown for a living. The film is written and directed by Bryan Johnson and executive produced by popular director Kevin Smith (Dogma, Chasing Amy, Clerks). This low-budget feature was shot in Red Bank, New Jersey, home of both men, and was first shown at the Toronto International Film festival in 2000. The film is set for a very limited release sometime in 2002, with a home movie release in late 2002.

Vulgar will be released in an unrated version in theatres and on home video, but word is that Blockbuster will have an R-rated version. This unique ratings and release strategy is due to the serious themes dealt with in the movie (part of the movie deals with the clown getting raped) and will likely limits its box-office potential. The movie is being kept quite low-key, even in the View Askew circle. It really does not fit the Kevin Smith mold for which View Askew has become famous, even though it stars Brian O'Halloran, a staple in most View Askew films. (Walid Habboub/BOP)
