This experimental film is the result of a collaboration between Matthew Barney, a visual artist best known for the Cremaster Cycle of films, and his wife Björk. Like Barney's previous work, the film is multimedia in its execution but has a purpose to its concept. The movie includes combinations of sculpture, performance, architecture, set design, music, CGI and prosthetics.

The theme is concerned with Shinto religious rites and aspects, particularly the theme of self-imposed limitation. To highlight this concept, Japanese locations, costumes and music are featured. Björk herself does the soundtrack, and the film contains very little dialogue. Look for a limited release, where Drawing Restraint 9 will be almost certain to develop a devoted following.
