One of the first acquisitions of Miramax in the aftermath of the Weinstein's departure, The Heart of the Game is a documentary that looks at six years of a girls high school basketball team in Seattle. When a college tax professor takes over as coach of the program, he initially has challenges with a tough inner city girl named Darnellia. While the team is having success and could potentially be on its way to a state championship, her off-court difficulties pose problems.

The Heart of the Game made its premiere at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival. It has thus far been well-received, with some reviewers favorably comparing it to Hoop Dreams. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
