The winner of the prestigious Palme d'Or at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival, The Child marked the second time that the sibling filmmakers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne had won the prize. Sony Pictures Classics picked up the North American distribution rights so that art house audiences will have the opportunity to see the picture.

The movie centers on 20-year-old Bruno and his girlfriend, Sonia. She is only 18 years of age and is the only legitimate provider for the pair. Bruno's income consists of thefts that he commits along with other kids in his gang. The thing is, Sonia has just given birth to Jimmy, their child. The movie examines the question of how Bruno can exist as a father when he is totally living for the now, solely concerned about the money he makes from his deals. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
