Amélie is the English title of the French film Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain (literally The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain). Amélie is a shy young French girl who decides her fate is to improve the lives of those around her. She goes about this task discreetly, correcting little wrongs here and there and generally making her friends and neighbors feel better about themselves. But it's Amélie who needs help when she meets an odd young man and embarks on a romance with what appears to be her soul mate.

This seems to be a charming little foreign film, with some very whimsical and fantastic images sprinkled amongst the more expected scenes. Some of Amélie's flights of fancy are given visual form, as are some of the director's more wistful notions. There is a trailer, but it's in French, so mostly what I came away with are images; the film is visually intriguing and somewhat universal. I may not have understood a lot of what was being said, but I got a pretty good idea of what was happening from watching it.

Amélie is currently in release in Europe, and is due for a US release on November 21, 2001. I expect it will have at least some life on the art-house circuit; as I'm not familiar with any of the stars or the director, however, I can't give any idea as to its possible popularity or lack thereof. I doubt it will see a wide release, however; foreign films rarely do. It will likely be more easily found on video within a few weeks of its release. (Stephanie Star Smith/BOP)
