Following in the footsteps of Flight 93, the Paul Greengrass-directed film about the passengers on one of the planes that was hijacked on 9/11, comes this similarly-themed project from Oliver Stone. His film will make its debut a month in advance of the five-year anniversary of the terrorist attacks that played so heavily into the psyche and history of the United States.
The film is set amidst the tragedy at the World Trade Center, and stars Nicolas Cage and Michael Pena as two Port Authority police officers who were among the rescuers who risked their own lives by rushing into the smoldering, potentially dangerous buildings in order to give aid to others. Ultimately, they had to be rescued as well, suffering a shortage of oxygen and the impending threat of the buildings' collapse.
Along with Cage and Pena, Maria Bello and Maggie Gyllenhaal are set to star as the wives of the trapped men. Will North American audiences be ready to accept films dealing with such sensitive subject matter? Flight 93 will give us a good indication, but Oliver Stone's involvement might put some people off as his star has fallen some in recent years. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
