Now *that's* what I call spelunking.

Position Staff In Brief
7/159 David Mumpower White hot horror flick reinvigorates the genre with sizzling combo of cerebral fear and shocking twists.
14/68 Michael Bentley A dark, claustrophobic and very scary movie. Sort of like a female (and more horrifying) version of Deliverance.
19/76 Dan Krovich Very effective horror movie, though it does get a bit repetitive.
30/65 Kim Hollis Even though 2007 appears to be the year I got over horror, The Descent was smart and interesting.

The Descent is a British horror film that was released in the UK in October of 2005. It opened to great reviews and, given the acclaim, earned an August U.S. release.

Neil Marshall directs a cast of relatively unknown actresses through downright scary paces. One of the movie's twists is that it is solely a group of women who are confronted by the horrors that await them as they tunnel through a cave, an activity designed to bond their friendships. Unfortunately, as they face the perils of the dark, their relationships with each other may be more threatening than the outside forces they face.

Horror films are becoming more common in the summer months and given the word of mouth after its British release, this one is an exceptionally well done and exceptionally scary bit of filmmaking. In the diog days of summer, don't be surprised to find teens, out of school and looking for a place to cool off, searching out The Descent. What the film's success really is going to rely on is how well Lionsgate markets a film with no stars. However, given its ability to take horror films with no big names to sell and make them a hit (think Saw), this may be one to watch as the summer wears down. (Stephanie DeGateo/BOP)
