Dogs check in but they don’t check out.

Okay, this is probably not the premise for the movie, unless it’s a Michael Vick production, anyway. For those of you who didn’t have a childhood, Hotel for Dogs is the big-screen adaptation of the 1971 Lois Duncan classic. The story and presumably the movie tell the story of a brother and sister who are orphans. They find themselves in the unlikely but hilarious position of being the caretakers for nine stray dogs. The kids realize that if grown-ups find out about these dogs, they will be sent to the animal shelter followed almost immediately by Puppy Heaven (would two Michael Vick jokes be piling on here?).

Hotel for Dogs is clearly a kiddie film, and Paramount (along with Nickelodeon Productions) is doing everything they can to ensure this title’s success. Julia Roberts’ niece, Emma, has been cast in the lead role. After Aquamarine and Nancy Drew, she’s built up a ton of credibility with the kids in the target demographic. Don Cheadle, currently going through a fetish for films with Hotel in the title, also co-stars along with former Friend Lisa Kudrow and Johnny Drama himself, Kevin Dillon. This is a harmless title that in no way, shape or form applies to you unless you have children or have Dogster.com as your home page. If you do have children, you will be hearing about this until you either A) get your child a real puppy or B) take them to see it. The latter solution is less pleasant, but at least you don’t have to do any cleaning up afterward. (David Mumpower/BOP)
