A French-language film that has been picked up by Universal Focus for US distribution, Brotherhood of the Wolf is based on the true story behind the Beast of Gevaudan, a creature which attacked women and children in the mountains of central France in the mid-18th century.
The plot for the film seems to be divided into two parts. The first half of the tale deals with the envoy sent by the king of France to investigate the attacks by the rarely-seen beast. In the second half of the film, the story turns to intrigue, as the hero is forced to fight not only the monster, but also ignorance and bigotry.
Brotherhood of the Wolf was initially released in France in January of this year, and response thus far has been quite positive. Naturally, the fact that it is a subtitled film is a major obstacle to any mainstream success, but if Miramax's upcoming French film, Amélie, does manage to find a niche, Brotherhood may see some residual success.
