I hope that Bruce Campbell doesn't turn me into an evil dead thing again.

On the Big Board
Position Staff In Brief
5/85 Kim Hollis An altogether charming, sweet film. Amy Adams is marvelous.
29/60 Les Winan Amy Adams is terrific with a role that could have been camp.
85/166 David Mumpower Amy Adams is so poignant that I am willing to overlook the film's numerous flaws. Quite possibly the best performance of 2005.

Primarily set in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Junebugs centers on Madeleine (Embeth Davidtz) a dealer in "outsider" art from Chicago. When she decides to journey to North Carolina to try to negotiate a deal with an eccentric painter, her husband George (Alessandro Nivola) decides to make the trip with her. His family is originally from North Carolina, and although he has attempted to separate himself from them and their culture, he finally decides that he should introduce his very city-centric wife to them.

Naturally, plenty of conflict ensues. George's mother is tough and prickly, and his father is the silent type who is impossible to read. Johnny, George's brother, is cranky over strong feelings of jealousy and memories of having constantly lived in his sibling's shadow. Johnny's extremely pregnant wife, on the other hand, is totally drawn to her Yankee sister-in-law.

Junebug screened at the Sundance, where Amy Adams won the special jury prize for her performance as the optimistic young mother-to-be. Director Phil Morrison was nominated for his work, as well. The film was one of the better-reviewed ones to come from the festival, and should attract some positive attention during its limited theatrical run. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
