Tartan Films continues its embrace of foreign fare as it releases Vital. Directed by Shinya Tsukamoto, an influential director best known for the surreal Tetsuo films, this Japanese film centers on a man named Hiroshi (Asano Tadanobu) who is suffering from amnesia as the result of a car accident. His parents take him home to recover, and he slowly begins to regain his memory and sees flashes of things that occurred before the accident.
Discovering a pile of medical books in his room, Hiroshi recalls that he was supposed to have been attending medical school by this time. He decides to go ahead and take the admittance exam and attend the school - somehow, he is simply drawn to the study of medicine. Once he is accepted into school, he meets another student who becomes interested in him romantically.
Time passes, and Asano has more and more memories come to the surface - and not all of them are at all pleasant. Events occur that lead him to have to contend with terrible things that happened in the days before his memory left him, and ultimately, he'll need to accept and come to terms with precisely what occurred.
