75/166 David Mumpower Perhaps it's damning with faint praise, but I was braced for much worse. God help me, I just can't ever stay mad at Steve Martin for an entire film.

The average family household has 1.87 children, but as we learned from Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt in the 2003 family film Cheaper by the Dozen, sometimes it's a whole lot of fun to be a part of a much larger group. In that film, Martin portrayed a football coach and Hunt was the mother who had to leave the home to go out on a book tour. Meanwhile, Martin had just taken a great job as a coach of a Big Ten football team, which meant that he also had an increased workload of his own. With mom gone and dad's life becoming busier and busier, the Baker family's life turns topsy-turvy.

Cheaper by the Dozen was a top-notch success, surprising forecasters as it opened to $27.5 million for its December debut. Over the long haul, it capitalized on its family-friendly aspect to notch a grand total of $138.6 million at the North American box office. Given the fact that the film was made (relatively) cheaply, it was a natural for a sequel, and indeed the Bakers will return for a second go-round.

In Cheaper by the Dozen 2, the Bakers will take the 12 kids out for a family vacation. Even though they should theoretically be trying to relax, they actually find themselves competing with a rival family that has eight children. Eugene Levy will play the patriarch of that group, and he'll have a trophy wife who will be portrayed by Carmen Electra. Given the warm familiarity family audiences will have had with the first film, Cheaper by the Dozen 2 is poised to find similar success as it hits theaters during the holiday season.
