"Many who have spent a lifetime in passion can tell us less of love than the child that lost a dog yesterday."

This is one of the masterful quotes that come from Thornton Wilder's 1927 Pulitzer Prize winning novel, The Bridge of San Luis Rey. So far, the book has been turned into a movie three times, with the latest incarnation starring Robert De Niro, Gabriel Byrne, Harvey Keitel and Kathy Bates.

Brother Juniper (Byrne), a contemplative friar, is a witness to the collapse of a rope bridge that passes over a gorge in rural Peru. Five people are killed in the catastrophe, which leads Juniper to believe the accident is providing him the opportunity to prove the existence of God. He thinks that there must surely be a divine reason that these particular five have been chosen for death. As a result, he throws himself into learning everything he can about the victims so that he can understand the plan and show that reality of God goes beyond faith. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
