The Real Cancun
Release Date:
April 25, 2003
Bunim-Murray, the production company behind the mega-hit MTV shows "The Real World," "Road Rules" and "Making the Band" throw their hat into the feature film arena with this "real" look at 12 college students who go on spring break together in Cancun, Mexico. This early contender for Best Documentary for next year's Oscar race will follow said college students as they party hearty in the infamous meat market known as Cancun, Mexico. Following on the heels of the incredible success of last year's Jackass, Bunim-Murray hopes to draw the MTV crowd to cinemas to see a perhaps more adult version of the normal "Real" television series.
The concept should be a tough sell as the premise is nothing like that of Jackass. There are many differentiators between the two; for one, Jackass was sold on the promise of presenting material that can never be seen on MTV while featuring some insanity that, if not entertaining, has to be considered slow-down-to-watch-a-car-accident-worthy. The only way for Real World to follow suit is to present nudity and hardcore sex, not that we'd mind. At the same time, the ratio of people who have been to spring break to people who will get a tattoo while off-roading is very high, especially amongst the key demographic of college students. Nevertheless, Bunim-Murray might have a hit on their hands if they market the project well. (Walid Habboub/BOP)
