Based on the Oscar Wilde play Lady Windemere's Fan, A Good Woman is an elegant romantic comedy set on the Italian Riviera in the 1930s. In the film, the marriage of a young couple becomes jeopardized by gossip throughout the couple's high society acquaintances.

Mrs. Erlynne (Helen Hunt) has just arrived on the Amalfi coast and she is capturing the attention of all the men who reside in that upper crust seaside society. In fact, one Lord Augustus "Tuppy" (Tom Wilkinson) is so caught up in her charms that he proposes to her almost immediately. The real rumor, though, is that the married Robert Windermere (Mark Umbers) is providing her a secret allowance in exchange for being his kept woman.

Meanwhile, Robert's wife Meg (Scarlett Johansson) has become aware of the rumors surrounding her husband. As a result, she plans to abandon her own 21st birthday party to elope with the notorious playboy Lord Darlington (Stephen Campbell Moore). Of course, the rumors and whisperings are not at all what they have appeared to be, and as happens so frequently in Wilde plays, a comic misunderstanding has taken place. Will the players be able to work things out amongst themselves somehow?

A Good Woman played at the 2004 Toronto Film Festival, where it received numerous glowing reviews from attendees. With such a solid cast, it should be able to develop buzz as it sees release during awards season. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
