At the tender age of four, Thérèse Martin's mother passed away. It wasn't much later before she was abandoned by he surrogate mother as well. As a result, the young woman was plunged into depression and mental collapse.

Suddenly, at the age of 14, Thérèse falls deeply in love with God. Although she is not quite old enough at this point to join a convent, she journeys to the Vatican and bravely steps forward at a papal audience to plead for permission to become a Carmelite nun. It is this bold request that allows her to bring fresh change to both the Catholic Church and the world. She was allowed to enter the Carmelite convent at Lisieux.

Although Thérèse was happy at the convent, she did suffer some spiritual dry spells that she had to learn how to deal with. She determined to see God in everything, even the most ordinary events of everyday life. As a result, she found herself becoming closer and closer to Him. After making her profession, Thérèse was filled with great peace.

Slowly, her health started to decline. Thérèse contracted tuberculosis, but somehow managed to stay happy and upbeat. When she passed away at the age of 24, the words, "My God, I love you!" were on her lips. Her writings which were published as The Story of a Soul have provided a great source of people of the Catholic religion worldwide. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
