It's the late 1960s and the English invasion has successfully dominated the entire world. The Liverpool influence is showing its presence in every single country with one exception - Ireland. In that country, Ceili music, a form of the traditional Celtic melody, is the most popular form of music in the land. There's just about to be a battle of the bands to decide who is the actual best performer of Ceili music in the country.

However, an Irishman named Jimmy MacMahon (Colm Meany) has moved to Liverpool and he and a group of Englishmen from that city have big plans. They're hoping to turn tradition on its head and be the first English band to win this competition. They'll be going against Jimmy's older brother John Joe (Bernard Hill), whose considerably more local band has their hearts set on winning the prize for the third year in a row. What results is a feud that is carried out as both brothers attempt to sabotage each other and win the trophy by whatever means necessary.

Naturally, complications arise. Teddy (Shaun Evans), one of Jimmy's Liverpudlian flute players, falls desperately in love with John Joe's beautiful young fiddle player Anne (Andrea Corr). Her mother is super protective of her child, and in an attempt to keep her from ending up with a broken heart, tells her daughter the true identity of her father. It just so happens that Jimmy MacMahon, the Irishman who moved to Liverpool, abandoned Anne's mother when he learned she was pregnant. Needless to say, this makes the competition between the two brothers even more fierce - particularly because John Joe was in love with Anne's mother until Jimmy stole her heart.

The Boys from County Clare debuted at the 2003 Toronto Film Festival. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
