Garage Days is a much lighter film than director Alex Proyas' last two efforts (The Crow, Dark City). He takes a look at the world of grunge music in Australia and trying to make your dreams come true.

The story is about a young and struggling garage band in Sydney. We follow them around in their various adventures and misadventures as they try to make it to the big time. Lead singer Freddy (Kick Gurry) works in a record shop by day, but is trying to be a rock star at night. Other members of the band are Freddy's bass-playing girlfriend Tanya (Pia Miranda), drummer Lucy (Chris Sadrinna) who's in it for the hot sex and plentiful drugs, and the brooding guitar player Joe (Brett Stiller).

The relationships between the members of the band are the main focus of the film. They are constantly examined, re-examined, and ever changing. The group finds it's tough to get anywhere without quality bonds.

A decent manager wouldn't hurt either. Their promoter, Bruno (Russell Dykstra) really doesn't have his heart in it or his head on straight. One memorable scene comes about when Bruno mixes up the name of the club where the band is supposed to perform so no one shows up. Eventually, they do get a big break at a local music festival.

Proyas and co-writer Dave Warner have some experience with the garage band scene and independent album production. These experiences have brought a true sense of realism to the movie. The film has been getting quite a bit of positive talk since it premiered in Australia in October 2002 and has even won a few awards. Unfortunately, this film has had quite a few release date changes for its U.S. theatrical release. It was originally supposed to be released in early 2003, but is currently scheduled for July 18th. Keep an eye out for this film at your local limited release venues. (Marty Doskins/BOP)
