The Eye is an interesting psychological thriller from China that is an example of an organ transplant gone terribly awry. The Pang twins (Danny and Oxide) directed and co-wrote this movie along with feature film debut writer Jo Jo Yuet-Chun Hui. You will see some plot elements from other films, most notably The Sixth Sense.

Our story follows a twentyish girl named Mun (Lee Sin-Je) who has been blind since birth. She receives a corneal transplant that will finally allow her to see the world around her. As her vision begins to clear up slowly from the surgery she finds two unusual "side effects". One, she sees dead people. Two, when she looks in the mirror, she doesn't see herself. Instead she looks into the image of the donor of her new corneas.

Mun teams up with her doctor (Lawrence Chou) and travels to find out more about this mysterious organ donor. Did he have these visions? Is there something about his past that will help explain this condition? That remains to be "seen" (pardon the pun).

Soon after its world premiere, Tom Cruise's production company snatched up the English-language remake rights. They saw Dreamworks do this with The Ring/Ringu and thought they better get in on the action. As of this writing, there is some initial work already being done on an initial script.

This movie has already been winning awards at various film festivals, especially for visual effects and best actress awards for our heroine. With the interest in The Ring, we should see more remakes of these Asian horror films popping up in theaters. If you get a chance, make sure to see the originals and see how the remakes stack up.
