A topical romantic comedy based on a true story, Stateside follows a rebellious rich kid named Mark Deloach (The Deep End's Jonathan Tucker). After getting in some trouble, Mark is given the option of either going to jail or enlisting in the Marines. While there, he is trained by a hard-nosed drill instructor named Skeer (Val Kilmer). Mark's assignment winds up being Beirut, and he is there on October 23, 1983 when a truck full of explosives rips through a Marine barracks, killing 241 soldiers and sailors.

While on leave, Mark meets a beautiful but crazy young musician-actress-whatever named Dori (Rachael Leigh Cook). The young man goes against the wishes of his family and friends, not to mention the strict rules and regulations of military life, to discover romance and peace with the young woman. Though they may face obstacles that could pull them apart, their love overcomes the intimidating tribulations before them.

With many families currently finding themselves pulled apart as a result of the military action being taken in Iraq, Stateside appears to be a film that should have some appeal to people who can relate to the situations being relayed in the story.
