A defacto "spin-off" from the Ice Cube Barbershop films, Beauty Shop will hope to capture the essence of the community spirit that made Barbershop and Barbershop 2: Back in Business such popular hits both critically and financially.

Queen Latifah returns as the "sassy" Gina, the new character that was introduced in the Barbershop sequel. She's relocated from Chicago to Atlanta so that her daughter can attend a famous music school. She takes her skills to a local shop where she is hired by a flamboyant boss (Kevin Bacon) who all to willingly takes credit for Gina's work.

Now we all know that no one as opinionated and self-assertive as Gina is going to stand for that nonsense, so she takes off and starts her own beauty shop that will directly compete with her former boss's store, as Gina's new uptown customers clash with the ones from downtown.

Naturally, the communication and dialogue are going to be the things that drive the story here, as part of the glory of the beauty shop is that good friends like to go there to gossip. And if you have secrets, well, perhaps trying to keep them from a woman with a crimper in her hand isn't exactly the best idea.

Latifah has been nothing short of white hot since her Academy Award nomination for Chicago; Bringing Down the House was a bona fide hit, and the fact that her name was listed in the credits for Barbershop 2 surely didn't hurt matters much, either. MGM looks to have another potential franchise in the making. (Kim Hollis/BOP)

Djimon Hounsou, Alicia Silverstone and Mena Suvari have all joined the cast. Hounsou will have the lead male role, while Silverstone will play the sole white stylist in Latifah's shop. Meanwhile, Suvari is portraying an snobby, upper-crust socialite. (Kim Hollis/BOP)

Kevin Bacon has joined the cast and will play Jorge, the owner of the hair salon where Latifah's character initially works upon moving to Atlanta. When she quits and opens her own store, Jorge becomes her nemesis. (Kim Hollis/BOP)
